What is established

The Birmingham station ABC 33/40 reported the death that week, naming the yard, his employer and his job. The Federal Railroad Administration, the federal agency that oversees rail safety, led the investigation.

That is the whole of the verified core: where he was, what he was doing, what day it was and who investigated. Everything past that point in the circulating accounts is either an unsettled detail or an inference.

Why this page does not say "derailment"

The word attached to this story almost everywhere is derailment. It comes from one source. The Jefferson County deputy coroner was reported as saying Bankston was thrown from a train in a partial derailment, and that characterisation travelled into national write-ups within a day.

The other two accounts do not match it. A vice president of Alabama Warrior Railway described an incident involving a railcar. ABC 33/40's own report does not mention a derailment. No investigation finding has been published that would settle which description is right, so this page says he died in a rail yard accident while working as a conductor, and leaves the mechanism where the record leaves it.

The date some sources get wrong

Two dates circulate. The Hollywood Reporter and ABC 33/40 both put the death on Tuesday 24 June 2014. CBS News printed 25 June. In 2014, 24 June was the Tuesday, which is the day every account describes.

It is a one-day discrepancy and it matters only because it propagates. Pages that copy the 25 June date usually copy the rest of their details from the same place.

Bankston played Survivor: Blood vs. Water, the twenty-seventh season, which aired in the autumn of 2013. He was the fourteenth castaway voted out, on day 29, and sat on the jury. He was a railroad conductor from Collinsville, Alabama, and the show made no secret of the job.

The season paired players with loved ones, and his was his fiance, Colton Cumbie, who had played Survivor: One World the year before. Cumbie quit on day seven of Blood vs. Water. Their engagement was public throughout the season and afterwards.
