What the record shows

What the doctor found on Day 16

Colton Cumbie played Survivor: One World, the twenty-fourth season, on the Manono tribe. Partway through filming he collapsed with severe abdominal pain. The medical team's doctor examined him and diagnosed possible appendicitis that required immediate evacuation, and he left the game on Day 16. Jeff Probst told the remaining tribes that Cumbie had been evacuated with acute appendicitis.

Note the two wordings, because they are not the same wording. What the doctor recorded was possible appendicitis, the working call that justified pulling a player out of the field immediately. What the host told the tribes on camera was acute appendicitis. Nothing in the record turns the first into the second.

The day number most retellings get wrong

The evacuation was on Day 16. Day 24 is a commonly repeated error and appears in a lot of summaries and forum posts about this exit.

It is worth checking, because a page that has the day wrong is usually working from another page rather than from the season record, and the rest of what it says about the medical exit deserves the same suspicion.

What Cumbie said it actually was

Days after leaving, Cumbie gave an interview to E! News that was published on 22 March 2012. He said "It wasn't actually appendicitis." His account was that he had a severe bacterial infection of the stomach and intestinal lining, and that it was treated with antibiotics.

That is his own account of his own illness, given within days and never withdrawn. It is not a document. No discharge record, physician's note or production medical log has been published by Cumbie or by anyone else, so his correction sits alongside the doctor's field diagnosis rather than overturning it on paper.

What Probst said in 2013, and what Cumbie said back

CBS cast Cumbie again the following year for Survivor: Blood vs. Water, where he played on Galang. He asked to leave the game at Redemption Island. Probst pressed him on it in front of both tribes and said he could now confirm for himself that this was a second quit, adding: "The first time you feigned appendicitis. Turns out you didn't have it."

That is the host's characterisation, made on air, and it is the origin of nearly every version of this story online. It has never been substantiated by any medical record. Cumbie rejected it in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on 3 October 2013, asking why he would have walked away from One World when he was holding an idol and controlling the game. His denial carries the same weight here as the accusation: one person said it, one person denied it, and no third thing exists.

The two-time quitter line depends on the disputed half

Probst's phrasing counts two quits. Only one of the two exits is recorded as a quit. The One World departure is on the show's own record as a medical evacuation ordered by its doctor, and calling it a quit requires accepting the accusation that came a year and a half later.

So the two-time quitter description is not a neutral summary of what happened. It is a restatement of the contested claim, and pages that repeat it are usually repeating Probst rather than the season record.

Why this cannot be settled

There is no legal proceeding, no CBS statement, no investigation and no production finding. The one thing that would resolve it, a medical document from March 2012, has never been published by either side. That is not a small gap. It is the entire dispute.

So the two halves have to stay apart. The evacuation is established: a doctor made the call and a player left on Day 16. Whether the illness was appendicitis, and whether anything about it was feigned, is an accusation by the show's host against a living person who denies it, and this site does not resolve it in either direction.
