What happened at the day 9 reward challenge

On day 9 of Survivor: Kaoh Rong the tribes played a reward challenge in heat that interrupted the game three separate times. The episode, the fourth of the season, was titled "Signed, Sealed and Delivered" and aired on 9 March 2016. Debbie Wanner went down first and was treated where she was, with water, ice and shade. Cydney Gillon was treated next, on the same terms. Both were cleared by the show's medical team and kept playing.

Caleb Reynolds was the third. He collapsed, and the medical team gave him cold intravenous fluids at the site before a helicopter took him out. He did not return to the game. Three castaways treated at one challenge is the part of this story that usually falls away in the retelling; most versions keep only the helicopter.

Why only one of the three left the game

The difference was what could be reversed on the beach. Wanner and Gillon responded to cooling and were cleared to carry on. Reynolds did not, and the decision to pull him was made on the show's medical advice rather than by him. Wanner lasted to day 24 and Gillon to day 37, so neither treatment ended a game.

Reynolds has given his own account of the collapse. Speaking to Hollywood Life the day after the episode aired, he described his eyes starting to get blurry and said that after he fell in the shade, that was it. He also said his recovery took longer than he had expected. That account comes from him, and it is the closest thing to a first-person record of what happened after the cameras stopped following him.

The 110-degree figure and the five days in intensive care

Two details follow this story everywhere it is retold: that Reynolds' core temperature reached 110 degrees Fahrenheit, and that he spent five days in intensive care. Neither could be traced past later roundups. Gold Derby's index of Survivor medical evacuations carries the 110 figure, and an AOL roundup of medically removed players repeats it. Neither number was found in Reynolds' own interviews, in CBS material or in reporting from 2016.

The word "unresponsive" has the same problem. What the located sources support is that Reynolds lost awareness and was in serious distress, which is not the same as a documented period of unresponsiveness, and this page does not assert one. None of these three details are called false here. They are simply unsupported by anything that could be opened, and a number that specific should have a source behind it.

What the record does not say

No clinical diagnosis for any of the three has been published by CBS or by the castaways themselves. Roundups label the Reynolds evacuation heat stroke; that is the roundups' word, not a diagnosis anyone with access to his chart has released. What is established is that all three were treated for heat illness by the show's medical team and that one of them was flown out.

There was also no legal proceeding, no claim and no public finding of fault against anyone. Nothing on this page should be read as a judgment on how the challenge was run or on the decisions the medical team made in the moment.

What came after

Reynolds recovered and returned to play Survivor: Game Changers in 2017, his second season and second nine-day stay. Wanner also returned for that season. Gillon has not played again; she finished fourth on Kaoh Rong after losing the fire-making challenge on day 37.

Kaoh Rong is remembered as a punishing season for reasons beyond this one challenge, and Reynolds' evacuation is the moment most often cited. The fuller version is that the heat reached three people that day and that the show's medical team stopped the same challenge three times.
