What happened on Day 17

Michael Skupin was tending the camp fire on the seventeenth day of Survivor: The Australian Outback when he breathed in enough smoke to lose consciousness. He passed out and fell into the fire. His hands took the burns.

The burned hands were wrapped in gauze and a helicopter flew him off the location to a burn unit in Brisbane. ABC News reported the burns, the dressings, the airlift and what Skupin told his family in the days afterwards. That contemporaneous account, together with the footage that aired, is what this page rests on.

Why this was a first

Every castaway before him left because the other players sent them home. Skupin left because a doctor said he had to. That made him the first medical evacuation in the American version of Survivor, and it added a second way out of the game to a show that until then had only had one. He finished 11th.

The distinction still matters when people count boots. Skupin was not voted out of The Australian Outback. His torch was not snuffed at tribal council, and no vote was cast against him on his way out.

The two details that get repeated wrong

The first is the date. Some later roundups place the fall on Day 18. The contemporaneous reporting and the episode put it on Day 17, and that is the figure used here.
