Who is actually banned from Survivor?

CBS has never published a list of banned Survivor players, and no such list has ever been shown to exist. What does exist is a short set of documented production actions: players removed from a game, and players kept off a reunion stage. Everything else people call a ban is someone who was not cast again, or who said no.

Confirmed No master blacklist has ever been published. Almost everything called a ban is an inference drawn from someone simply not being cast again.

What the record shows

  • Confirmed Dan Spilo was removed from Island of the Idols during filming and did not appear at the reunion, which was pre-taped. He is the only player pulled from a game for conduct.
  • Confirmed Vytas Baskauskas was barred from the Cambodia reunion after leaving post-game sequester early, which the production treated as a contract breach.
  • Confirmed Two Survivor 49 cast members were removed roughly twelve hours before filming began for repeatedly breaking the no-talking rule. Their identities have never been released and should not be guessed at.
  • Admitted Jeff Probst said publicly that he was not comfortable having Richard Hatch represent a family show. Hatch was left out of Winners at War. That is the closest thing on record to a production rejecting a specific player.
  • Disputed Alec Merlino missed the David vs. Goliath reunion, reportedly after posting a photo with a castmate before the cast was announced. The account of a withheld fee and a contract breach traces to a single report citing unnamed sources, and no one has adjudicated it.
  • Unverified No CBS statement, no production statement and no contract clause describing a permanent ban on any named player has been located.
  • Confirmed Amanda Kimmel and Rob Mariano were both wanted for Survivor 50 and both declined. Calling either of them snubbed inverts what happened.
  • Admitted Julie Berry has said herself that she is ineligible to play again, because she travelled to Survivor locations with Jeff Probst and saw the production side of the show. That is a practical conflict she described, not a punishment anyone imposed.

The difference that matters

Nearly every list of banned Survivor players online is built the same way. Someone notices a player has not come back, finds a reason they might not have, and writes the two together as though the second caused the first. The show has cast well over a thousand player-seasons and has never explained a single casting omission except in Richard Hatch's case.

There are at least six different things being flattened into the word banned: removed from a game, barred from a reunion, cut late from a returnee cast, considered and passed over, never contacted, and asked but said no. Only the first two are things the production actually did to someone.

What production has actually done

The confirmed list is short. One player removed from a game for conduct, Dan Spilo. One player barred from a reunion for leaving sequester, Vytas Baskauskas. Two players removed before Survivor 49 started filming, still anonymous. Alec Merlino's reunion absence is real but the reason for it rests on one report and unnamed sources.

Richard Hatch is the only case where the show itself explained why someone was not there. Probst said on the record that he was uncomfortable having Hatch represent a family show, and Hatch was absent from Winners at War. Everything else in this category is inference.

The people who are not banned at all

Amanda Kimmel and Rob Mariano both turned down Survivor 50. Mariano said he was taking a break from competitive reality; Kimmel cited scheduling. Both are routinely listed as snubbed by people who assumed the absence was the show's decision.

Natalie White, Vecepia Towery, Todd Herzog, Jenna Morasca, Shane Powers and Teresa Cooper are all named in blacklist lore with nothing behind it. Some stepped back from the fandom by choice. Some were considered and cut. Being left off a returnee cast is a casting decision, and returnee seasons turn on theme, archetype spread, availability, health and recency far more than on whether anyone is in trouble.

Julie Berry is the most interesting case, because she answered it herself years ago. She said she cannot play again because she travelled to filming locations with Probst and saw how the show is made. That is a conflict of interest she described, and it is a better answer than the rumour it replaced.

Where the quitters fit

Probst spent years saying quitters would not be invited back, and he was visibly angry about the two who quit Nicaragua. In 2023 he announced that quitters' torches would no longer be snuffed, which reads as continued disapproval rather than a rule.

Even so, quitting is not one category. A family emergency, a medical crisis, a career-threatening injury and simply losing interest all get filed under the same word, and the show has never treated them the same way. The full list is on the Survivor quitters page.
