What the appeal judgment actually says

On 16 July 2026 the Cyprus Court of Appeal, sitting in its criminal jurisdiction, gave judgment in Criminal Appeal 238/2023. The panel of M. Ambizas, St. Christodoulidou-Messiou and I. Stylianidou was unanimous, and the reasons were delivered by Christodoulidou-Messiou J. The appeal against conviction was dismissed and the first-instance judgment was affirmed.

The judgment sets out five counts on which Taner Tolga Tarlacı was convicted at first instance: rape, deprivation of liberty for the purpose of sexual abuse, common assault, and two counts of threatening violence. It records the prison terms imposed on each count, 10 years, 3 years, 4 months, and 1 year on each threat count, and it records that they run concurrently. Concurrent terms mean the longest one governs, so the effective sentence is 10 years.

Where the 18-year figure came from

In September 2024 Turkish and Turkish Cypriot outlets carried the story with a single number attached to it. Gündem Kıbrıs published it on 10 September 2024 under a headline stating that the court had sentenced Tarlacı to 18 years in prison. Hürriyet ran its own version the following day with the same figure. Aggregators and social posts copied the number from there, and it has been the figure in circulation ever since.

That figure is not in the official judgment. Nothing in the appellate text produces 18 years by any reading: not the individual terms, not their total, and not the effective sentence, which is 10 years because the terms are concurrent. One plausible route to 18 is adding the counts together and ignoring the concurrency, but that is a reconstruction, and no source has been located that shows where the number originated.

The count that is not there

The offence list in the Turkish reporting does not match the judgment either, and the outlets do not agree with each other. Hürriyet described charges of harassment, assault and robbery. Robbery does not appear among the five counts the Court of Appeal lists, and no charging document containing it has been located.

This matters more than the arithmetic. A robbery count would describe a different kind of case from the one the judgment describes, and the sexual offences at the centre of the actual record are not what the most widely read Turkish account led with. Anyone repeating that version is repeating an offence list the court file does not support.

What this page does not state

There is no incident year here, and that is deliberate. The appellate judgment gives 2 April 2020 in its introductory summary of the charges and 2 April 2022 in the trial narrative it quotes. One of those is wrong. Resolving it needs the first-instance file, which has not been obtained, so publishing either date would mean guessing.
