Returnees improve—but the invitation is doing part of the selecting
Returning appearances finish 2 percentile points higher on average and reach the jury phase 7.6 points more often than first appearances. That is a real descriptive advantage in this dataset.
It is not a clean estimate of experience. Players are invited back because they were memorable, strategically promising, popular, or unfinished stories. The returnee pool has already passed a producer-defined filter that first-time players have not.

Key findings
- Finish percentile normalizes placement for cast size: 100 is first place and 0 is last.
- Returnees are selected, not random. Being invited back is itself related to a player’s first performance and television impact.
- Mixed and all-returnee seasons create very different competitive environments, which are combined in this broad comparison.

Methodology and limitations
What we counted
For each castaway, the earliest season is a first appearance and every later season is a returning appearance. Placement is converted to a 0–100 percentile within that season’s cast.
Read this with care
This comparison cannot show that experience causes better or worse results. Selection effects and season format are major confounders.
