What he was charged with

On 5 July 2006 Brian Heidik was arrested in Douglas County, Georgia and charged with cruelty to animals and battery. The battery count was reported as family-violence battery, which is the category the charge was filed under, not a description of anything a court has found. He was released on bond after a hearing in Douglas County Magistrate Court. An Associated Press report carried that same day is the source almost every later account traces back to.

A coyote or a puppy: two accounts, never reconciled

At the bond hearing Heidik told the judge he believed the animal was a coyote that had been harassing his pets.
