Michael Skupin: convicted on four counts, no CBS ban on record

A jury convicted Michael Skupin on 18 November 2016 on four of six counts of possessing child sexually abusive material. He was sentenced to one to four years and paroled in December 2017. He separately pleaded no contest to one count of larceny by conversion. CBS has never announced a sanction.

The two prosecutions are kept apart: one ended in a jury verdict, the other in a no contest plea. The federal order gives 19 March 2019 as the discharge date for the prison sentence, while encyclopedia summaries give a parole end of 3 January 2021. No primary record was opened that reconciles the two, and the four year probation term on the larceny count may account for the later date.

The verdict and the sentence

On 18 November 2016 an Oakland County, Michigan jury convicted Michael Skupin on four of the six counts he faced of possessing child sexually abusive material, which is the wording Michigan law uses. Six counts were charged. Four came back guilty. That gap is part of the record and should not be rounded off in either direction.

Judge Wendy Potts sentenced him on 27 December 2016 to one to four years in prison and he was required to register as a sex offender on release. A 2018 Michigan Department of Attorney General publication states the same four counts and the same one to four year term. He was paroled on 19 December 2017, roughly a year into the sentence.

The money case is a different case

There were two prosecutions and they ended in different ways. The possession counts went to a jury. The financial counts did not. On 21 November 2016, three days after the verdict, Skupin pleaded no contest to one count of larceny by conversion tied to his Pay It Forward business. At the December sentencing he received four years of probation on that count and was ordered to pay $31,800 in restitution.

A no contest plea disposes of a charge without admitting the conduct, so it is not an admission of guilt and this page does not present it as one. The investigation had also produced five larceny by conversion counts and one racketeering count. The racketeering count did not result in a conviction. Coverage of the investigation used the phrase Ponzi scheme, and it stayed a description in the press rather than something a court found.

The sentence ended in 2019; the registry entry did not

In 2020 Skupin filed a federal habeas petition. The order denying it, entered on 11 January 2021, is useful for one reason beyond its result: it records that he was discharged from the possession sentence on 19 March 2019, and it denies the petition because a person whose sentence has fully expired is no longer in custody for habeas purposes. That is a jurisdictional holding. The court did not revisit whether he was guilty, and nothing in it disturbs the 2016 verdict.

Registration outlasted the sentence. When the Michigan State Police Public Sex Offender Registry was checked on 26 July 2026, the record for Michael David Skupin showed a status of Active and a compliance status of Compliant, last verified 30 January 2026. Active there means the registry entry is live, not that he is in prison or under supervision. Registry states change, so anyone relying on this should check the registry directly rather than treat a 2026 snapshot as permanent.

No ban has ever been announced

The most common thing said about Skupin online after the convictions is that Survivor banned him. No CBS statement, production statement, sanction or ban has been located. His last appearance was Survivor: Philippines in 2012, four years before the arrest, and CBS has never publicly stated a position on his eligibility.

Not returning and being barred from returning are different things, and only one of them is on the record. Hundreds of players never come back for reasons that have nothing to do with a network decision. Absent a direct statement, calling him banned asserts something nobody has shown.

What this page does not have

No archived copy of the federal order, the registry record or the Attorney General publication was obtained, so those three citations rest on live retrieval rather than a stored capture. The Michigan Department of Corrections offender tracking system no longer carries an interactive record, because its published scope drops people more than three years past discharge from supervision. The 2021 court order is what fixes the discharge date.

The supervision end date is the one open thread. The court order gives 19 March 2019 for the prison sentence. Summaries elsewhere give a parole end of 3 January 2021, which may be the four year probation term on the larceny count rather than parole at all. Without the county file the two cannot be reconciled, and neither is asserted here as the final word.
