Osten Taylor did not walk off the beach. He told his Morgan tribemates he wanted out and then sat through a vote. Andrew Savage, Ryan Opray, Tijuana Bradley and Darrah Johnson all wrote his name, and Taylor did not vote at all. On paper it is a 4-0 vote-out at the episode 7 Tribal Council on day 19.

What made it a quit rather than a boot was that he engineered it, and Jeff Probst treated it that way. Instead of the line the show gives everyone else, Probst said, "Osten, per your wishes, go home." That improvised send-off is why this exit is remembered, and why the phrase is still what people search for.

Two reasons, 24 hours apart

The day after the episode aired, Taylor told the Boston Herald that his body had given out. He said he was carrying six staph infections on his chest and legs and that he had gone from 205 pounds to 165 pounds across 19 days. That is a 40-pound loss, and it is the version most retellings of this story use.

The next day he told TV Guide something else. There, he put the decision on the Outcasts twist, which had just returned previously eliminated players to the game, and said the end did not justify the means. In the same interview he called the wish to leave he had expressed earlier "a smoke screen."

Both accounts come from him. Both were given within 48 hours of the episode. This page does not pick between them, because no source does.

What the health claims are and are not

The staph count and the weight figures rest entirely on Taylor's word. No medical record has surfaced, CBS has never addressed them, and no doctor or producer has confirmed a number. That is worth stating plainly, because the figures get repeated as though they were a diagnosis on file.

Two readings that go beyond the record should be avoided in both directions. Nothing here shows that Taylor invented or exaggerated his infections to dress up a quit.
